Sustainable Leadership? ‘Bring back the sun’…
What is Sustainable Leadership? I get that question regularly when I work from INSEYD with executives in organizations who want to take the next step when it comes to healthy, safe and environmentally aware working.
Sustainable leaders genuinely connect with others
‘I experienced a major accident 5 years ago in which colleagues were involved and since then I have found it very difficult to do the same work. And actually I’ve never dared to say that before’… It was immediately quiet in the training room when one of the participants, a calm, somewhat quiet man, spoke. With tears in his eyes, he told what he had experienced and how the accident affected his life privately and at work to this day. He had never talked about it, now everything came to the surface in one fell swoop.
This story keeps me 100% motivated as a facilitator and coach
I can still see him walking in during our 4 hour ‘construction site safety and behavior session’… He was about 2 meters tall and at least a meter wide, with arms like cables and a baseball cap pulled deep over his eyes. He plopped down on a chair and looked at me from under his cap. “I don’t feel like it, don’t participate and think all those safety things are just nonsense.” The tone was set and I responded with: “Well, at least you’re honest and clear.”
How the Comfort-Stretch-Panic model helps to understand behavior
In its programs, INSEYD often uses the Comfort-Stretch-Panic model to understand and explain the mentally and physically safe or unsafe work behavior of employees. This model was developed in 2006 by Ryan and Markova and mainly focuses on a person’s ability to learn. Ryan and Markova developed a theory based on the learning processes of a person. In the way we learn, 3 different zones are distinguished: a comfort zone, a stretch zone and a panic zone.
